I originally intended to turn my home gaming rig running an i7-920 on an MSI MS-7593 into a VMware server utilizing the Xeon x5650, but before I wanted to do that, I wanted to benchmark the x5650 against my 920, and well needless to say, the extra 2 cores rock. The x5650 uses les power then the 920, and when playing Battlefield 4, CPU usage is around 35% across all 6 cores whereas the 920 was around the 70-80% range.

Had to scrap my server plans, this chip rocks for gaming ;)

I upgrade the E5606 (2.13G) on 3 year old HP ML350 G6 with X5650 (2.66G), to my surprise, the windows experience rating for CPU dropped slightly from 7.1 to 7.0, that's no biggie. The installation was relatively easy, total of 10 minutes, no screw driver involved. Server comes up clean, and quiet as mouse. HP's box are notorious picky (loud) on thermal requirement of all its components, so it passed the test with flying colors. Acoustic and thermal feature are excellent, it is critical for me since I use the server and my main workstation. What's really shine is it increased the hardware thread count from 4 to 12, so I don't have to put in the 2nd CPU any more, with an Intel 730 SSD, it gives the machine a new life for at lease a few more years ( BTW, after the upgrade, the machine is no slower than my one year old Dell precision T7600 which had 2 E5-2600 series Xeon CPU). So this one hundred buck is well spent upgrade here.

When I build a gaming computer, I tend to pick out a motherboard with integrated sound, lots of places to put memory, and a socket with a very broad range of processor options.

The system I put this in started out in '08 with an Intel Core i7 960, though Xeons were always on the roadmap, I just wasn't willing to pay the Xeon premium at the time. After a LOT of gaming, multiple GPUs, countless hard drives, etc. All that was left of the original machine was the Haf-X case, the motherboard and the i7.

Then I got into video editing... Suddenly the trusty i7 960 that had soldiered on through countless deathmatches was limping, weak and holding back production. I went back to my (now 8 year old) roadmap... hoping... Looked up the Alpha processor on the list on Amazon... And it now costs what I paid for the i7 960!!!

I even hesitated before I put the Corsair liquid cooling on it, because I actually liked its stock HSF so much.

Thanks Intel!!! Here's to another 8 years!

20% benchmark increase from 930 i7, feeling cute, might overclock later, IDK. Runs great. Easy install. Doing video renders at 35% CPU load vs 90 % before, runs cooler too.

I haven't been able to much on my Dell Precision desktop for a while. The new Xeon chip solved my computer's SSE error. My Precision system has been running great since I installed the new chip. The system has installed the missing windows updates this morning. This 2.67 Ghz chip is a little faster than the old 2.4 Ghz.
