Used to upgrade my Mac Pro 2009
I'm on a tight budget and wanted, more like needed, to upgrade the processor in my newly bought used Mac Pro 2009. The old processor had a lower clock speed, only 4 processors and had been used for ~10 years. If I had more $ I would've gotten a faster processor, but those were in the $100 to $200 range from what I could find, and for ~$35 this is an amazing deal. It is definitely faster than the old one I had in there. Your whole system won't necessarily feel 'snappier' like when you switch to an SSD from a hard drive, but certain things you do will definitely feel faster. Plus it takes less power to use, lower temperatures and the fans don't turn on as high to keep it cool, so the computer is quieter! Also good thing to mention, if you want to upgrade your OS or Boot ROM, this is needed as well. Just remember to clean everything before installing it and putting thermal paste on it!

I have an older Asus P6T Deluxe motherboard that has been running a Core i7 920 since I built the computer in 2009. I would have happily used that CPU for another couple of years since we're at this point where hardware has surpassed software with multi-core technology if I had not done a random search for LGA1366 Xeon CPUs on Amazon. The price is right for upgrading a much older machine and the upgrade is significant adding two more cores and bumping the clock speed up to 2.93GHz. I do 3D character/creature animation in Autodesk Maya so the extra muscle here is most welcome. One thing to note is that this CPU did not work right after dropping it into my motherboard. It was necessary to clear the CMOS memory and boot with the default settings that motherboard automatically detected and applied. Since doing that, my machine has been rock solid in terms of stability and dramatically faster across gaming and 3D content creation.

The CPU arrived a day ahead of when it was expected and it was packaged well in anti-static packaging.

Replacement for a W3550 QUAD. (Was curious to see what 2 additional cores would do!) Nice & quick. HDD is the ONLY thing slowing down the system now! - Packaging could have been a little better, but it survived the trip cross county intact.

In 2009, I built a tower with an ASUS P6X58D-Premium mobo, Core I7-920 CPU, and 12 GB of Corsair X.M.P RAM. I tend to use Virtual Machines for almost everything. I find that, as I grow older, my patience for waiting around on computers, is vaporizing. So, I was looking into upgrading to a Z270 system, for increased speed. I spent a lot of time researching, before purchase. Then, I ran into a thread discussing X58 system upgrades. Turns out that simply replacing the I7-920 with a XEON X5670, (overclocking it to 4.2 GHz), and replacing my X.M.P. memory with 24 GB of HyperX, I've got the speed improvement I needed, and at a hell of a bargain! Looks like, when the X5670 hit the market in 2010, the MSRP was $1995. Wow! After running it for a while, I can report that it runs nice and cool with an EVO 212. I'm done with liquid cooling, after my old one sprung a leak. Anyhow, NICE CPU! Fast as heck, and now, affordable!

I have a Lenovo Think station S20 that I got used a couple years ago for pretty cheap. The motherboard is LGA 1366 and it came with a Xeon w3550 with 4 cores 8 threads at 3.06 GHz and 4.8 gt/s. I got this to upgrade that CPU and it is way better. Not only is the TDP lower which means less heat, but it is faster and has more cache in addition to the extra 2 cores and 4 threads. I have this CPU paired with 24 GB of DDR3 and a 1050 ti and it is a very nice machine now, with the added benefit of less heat under load and much lower fan noise. My CPU fan never ramps up while gaming anymore cause this CPU never goes above 65 C even under 100% load.

Works perfectly fine. I upgraded from the i7 940 and am using it on a asus p6t motherboard without any problems. This CPU let's my Ram run faster than the i7 940.
My normal ram speed is 1333mhz but the i7 940 only ran it on 1066 (when I changed the settings windows would crash) but after installing this CPU the ram speed automatically changed to the default ram speed (1333mhz).

    EDIT:
    I OC it to 4.00ghz

When it came early it made my day. Stuck it in Asus p6t ws revolution and after fing with Intel heatsink clasps that haven't been touched in 5 years I was ready to rock... Actually im an idiot and had to swap back to update bios. Then I was good 2 go. Runs cooler than i920 despite extra clock and cores. Only thing it didn't do is produce 4x 1tb 850pros and 24gb of ddr3 out a thin air, maybe that fancy new lga2011 has that ability /s

I originally purchased these for my HP DL-380 G5, thinking that it supported them. It did not, so I had to go buy a Dell R610 server with 196GB of RAM and 4TB of drive space with some really crappy procs in it. After upgrading the PSU's from 515watts to 770 or whatever wattage, these CPU's sream at unarchiving and processing of data now that my router exists as a virtual device on this box.
