First off, the looks. This motherboard is beautiful. The sleek, classy design of the IO panel and the lowkey, dark-themed background of the board itself make for a subtle yet classy look overall. The RGB eagle on the bottom of the board is bright but not too bright; with little light beneath my graphics card otherwise, the eagle makes for the perfect addition to my case.
I do have one qualm with the RGB functionality of the motherboard, however. Gigabyte does not tell you that their App Center that controls all Gigabyte software, including the RGB Fusion to control the lights on the motherboard itself, runs through the motherboard's on-board wifi. But this motherboard does not come with on-board wifi, so you cannot use their App Center to control the RGB lighting. You can only control it through the BIOS, which means you have to restart your computer everytime you want to change the color. That being said, it's not that big of a pain and not enough to knock down a star considering how incredible the rest of the board is for the price.
Next on the list, functionality. Able to accommodate all Ryzen chips for the next 3 years, this motherboard is a sound investment for anyone who wants roll with Ryzen like I chose to. Coming with solid on-board audio and a M.2 slot for the latest and greatest SSD (I have the 250GB Samsung 970 EVO), this motherboard also supports 4 DDR4 RAM slots, which is plenty for any casual gamer.
Last but not least, installation. Installation on this motherboard proved to be a breeze all around. CPU was a simple pop-in as well as the RAM. The GPU was fairly straightforward, just a bit tough trying to slip the card into its PCle slot. There's plenty of room to screw all the necessary screws in to mount it in your case as well. Additionally, most of the necessary connections, such as USB 2.0 and HD Audio, etc., are at the very bottom of the board, making all the cables less noticeable and reducing clutter considerably.
All-around this motherboard has proven to be incredible. For its price, it seriously cannot be beaten. It has everything: the slick, classy looks every PC builder wants, enough power and functionality to satisfy any avid gamer, and ease of install so that anyone from beginner to pro can put it together in no time. I would highly recommend this board to anyone going with Ryzen.
There are a few things that I find noteworthy: Storemi, RGB control and XMP profiles (RAM settings)
Storemi:
I've coupled a Samsung 250GB 970 Pro m.2 ssd with a Seagate 3T hdd. Storemi is delivering on it's promise, stuff loads at the ssd speed while feeling free to load up all my games. It doesn't kick in on first game load. But generally I am finding by the second time I load up a game the Storemi is kicking into high gear and delivering ssd load times.
RGB controls:
This is my first time building a system with RGB. I feel like the RGB control software could be more robust, but it does a satisfactory job in my opinion.
XMP profiles (memory settings):
It's been a few years since I built an AMD system. In my past experience getting memory to work can be hit and miss and was apparently aweak point of the 370 boards early on. I'm glad to report that my experience was very good with this Mobo. I am using 16GB of Adapt 3200GHz RAM. Gigabyte put up the QVL for this board in a timely manner which I appreciate and used to make a good choice. The bios memory settings were as simple as selecting one of two XMP profiles.
Very pleased with this Mobo, I recommend it. I think storemi is delivering on the promise that the ssd/hdd hybrid drives never could really do.
After trying different things for a week, I gave up and returned that RAM and got this one instead: G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8GB) Ripjaws V Series DDR4 PC4-25600 3200MHz Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB . This set of RAM worked the first time I set the XMP profile. The new RAM is rated at 3200mhz instead of 3000mhz, but I am only running it at 3000mhz, haven't bothered to try 3200mhz yet although I probably will at some point.
I've honestly never paid too much attention to approved RAM lists that you can find on motherboard manufacturer websites, this is the first time I had to. I highly recommend getting something off of that list if you get this motherboard, or really any Ryzen 2XXXX board since they're so new and a lot of BIOS are having trouble even recognizing any of the second gen Ryzen CPUs without a BIOS update first. Thankfully that part of the build process went fine, this board immediately recognized my Ryzen 2600x and my Windows 10 install went quickly. Glad I bought this board, it hasn't given me any trouble since I got RAM from the approved list, and my new PC is blazing fast.
I ditched my old Xonar DG soundcard that was part of my old build and just went with onboard audio, since I was dealing with driver issues off and on the past few years. I honestly can't tell much of a difference, although I think this onboard audio can be driven a little bit louder than my Xonar DG. It does tend to have a little distortion when you turn it up REALLY high, but we're talking only at very highest volume. I'm using a separate homemade AMP a friend of mine made.
The only thing that still puzzles me is it lists having a USB Type C connector in the back (which is the little one, not your usual USB 3.0/2.0) however I don't see one for me to plug my Pixel into. Not really a big deal for me either way, but still strange nonetheless.
