As announced in an earlier news post, in 2010 HWBOT will be holding a monthly Overclocking Challenge. In contrary the competitions held in the past, this series of challenges we will be using a variety of current generation low-end and old-skool high-end hardware. The aim is to give overclockers an alternative for the daily HWBoint hunts and, of course, just to have fun with low-cost hardware.

The first challenge of the year 2010 will be all about the GeForce4 series. We'll be using the 3DMark03 benchmark; whoever scores highest wins the competition.

Nice idea! Cool gift for the New Year!

December 29, 2009 at 9:55:32 AM UTC

oh joy an agp card contest? xD

December 29, 2009 at 2:38:15 PM UTC

wow, proper old school. Gunna have to dust off the agp setup.

December 29, 2009 at 9:40:56 PM UTC

Just one suggestion: Make please better wallpaper, than it was on CCup :) Make it pleasant for eye, not that ugly stuff before :D

December 30, 2009 at 4:17:10 PM UTC

I can help, if needed, just drop pm :D

oh joy an agp card contest? xD

Doesn't have to be ;)...GF4 PCX 4300 was an MX 4000 with an AGP->PCIe bridge...not that it'd be competitive or anything :P

The Terminator is here, He can stop him !!!

January 1, 2010 at 12:21:35 PM UTC

Want to add it, but admin page gives me errors when trying to see the competition.

January 1, 2010 at 11:41:05 PM UTC

I have not read this thread, I did not upload the wallpaper, then ...

fuuuuuu.jpg

January 1, 2010 at 11:55:14 PM UTC

I suppose you will be rebenching the card anyway?

January 2, 2010 at 3:44:48 AM UTC

Yes, I will rebench the card (:

The photos are here. I'll submit again with all problems solved.

January 3, 2010 at 12:35:00 AM UTC

I tthink the "use background" limitation is missing from stage.

also showing the details should be a must

January 3, 2010 at 10:37:37 AM UTC

Yes, I want to add all limitations to the competition, but the competition admin page is not functional at the moment :-/

January 3, 2010 at 11:10:48 PM UTC

Updated the competition page with the benchmark limitations.

January 4, 2010 at 1:37:57 AM UTC

can i take a pic of my rig instead because it has a nice case

January 4, 2010 at 9:57:20 AM UTC

or open case and make picture? :P

I might join in with:

Pentium 670 @ 92mm noctua cpu hs.

Asus P5VDC-MX

2Gigz DDR2

4600TI with improved cooling + vmods coming.

+ Random the stuffs.

Why's everybody running such "crap" chips at such "low" frequencies? :/

E8600 @ 3GHz on Asrock board, GF4200 @ 344/700MHz on water... Tempting, I hope I can get my board back in a hurry :D

thats not very old school... i use to have an asrock 939dual, it was a great board for me...

January 4, 2010 at 11:07:24 PM UTC

It's the way I would've liked to see this play out though.

January 4, 2010 at 11:10:25 PM UTC

Just wondering is there any Asrock AGP board that supports Wolfdales... Well my p4 is at low as 3.8GHz :D

just need to grab the board from work and recap+flash the 4600TI :P

January 5, 2010 at 10:17:59 AM UTC

They support it, but not the 333FSB ones.

Hey guys, don't forget to indicate the brand of the VGA card you're using ... always nice to see the stats on that :D

January 5, 2010 at 2:20:04 PM UTC

They support it, but not the 333FSB ones.

They do, but the FSB wall is around 300MHz. Stock is 200x10 :P

Oh, must be a new bios update then. I had the PT880U based board for a while and a Wolfdale-based CPU was locked in multiplier x6. Couldn't change the MP, so ... :-/

January 5, 2010 at 2:37:33 PM UTC

Damn the TI4200 i got is damaged, cant run any 3D-App without crashing, even after swapping cooler and underclocking.

January 5, 2010 at 3:03:35 PM UTC

könnte auch am CPU takt liegen, ab 3,4 GHz kommt bei mir die gleiche meldung.

January 5, 2010 at 3:10:02 PM UTC

3.4GHz sounds good :D

January 5, 2010 at 3:11:49 PM UTC

I want to learn how to do some overclocking and thought this would be a good opportunity to learn it. Since the hardware is older the costs shouldn't be so high. But are components even available on new or second hand market? Or should i have most of the component on hand already?

January 5, 2010 at 3:18:28 PM UTC

is Xeon 2,4 @ 3,4 / sockel 604 default Vcore (no Pinmod.)

max score 2247 :(

Wings of Fury max 142 :(

January 5, 2010 at 3:21:59 PM UTC

@DShadow: you need a AGP-Board+CPU (there are even some newer boards with more recent sockets) and the gfx card (look at ebay)

January 5, 2010 at 3:53:09 PM UTC

@DShadow: you need a AGP-Board+CPU (there are even some newer boards with more recent sockets) and the gfx card (look at ebay)

And aftermarket vga coolers are those still widely available? For the older vga cards?

January 5, 2010 at 4:05:34 PM UTC

You can even use newer ones, you only have to look for the distances of the holes of the cooler (dont know the word for that in english :D). It should be the same like my GF6200, its ~53mm.

January 5, 2010 at 5:38:03 PM UTC

Good competition ^^

January 5, 2010 at 6:28:26 PM UTC

Looks like backup games are in progress :P

January 5, 2010 at 8:56:42 PM UTC

I think i'll put Thermalright HR05/IFX as hs for my 4600TI, should cool enough with good fans =P

January 5, 2010 at 9:16:08 PM UTC

Hope there will be a SocketA or a GF6 competition, have the hardware for it :D

January 6, 2010 at 10:38:09 AM UTC

for me it is the GPU clock, Ram is OK

Has anyone seen benefits from increasing the AGP bus frequency?

January 6, 2010 at 11:00:10 AM UTC

Yes, artifacting and dead cards :P

January 6, 2010 at 11:02:01 AM UTC

I would suggest that the validations are required for competitions hwbot to prevent fraud. It is important to the results above suspicion in competitions. What do you think?

January 7, 2010 at 1:17:00 AM UTC

I ll post a submission tomorrow. i was trying to get 350 out of the setup. I read I can do pin mods on my socket a athlon and overclock further -- so im going to try some of those.

Whoever cheats/commits fraude in an HWBOT competition is banned for life. I hope that shows how serious we are about this :)

Hi guys,

Do those both rankings mean that the final ranking will be splitted in two?

Low-end GeForce 4 on one hand and High-end GeForce 4 on the other hand?

I have seen no reference to that in the presentation of the competition.

Thanks ;)

January 7, 2010 at 10:53:02 AM UTC

Un-official ranking ;-)

January 7, 2010 at 10:53:48 AM UTC

Thanks Massman,

but will it give points ?

January 7, 2010 at 11:12:42 AM UTC

How do you mean?

January 7, 2010 at 11:33:21 AM UTC

Well for exemple during the MSI Extrem Speedster, the Corei5 were given points depending on all CPUs, but at the end of the event, the best Core i5 was given 10 points in each stage.

In the Hwbot OC 2010 challenge, le MX 440 are ranked with the Ti. Let's say the stage is over. Pxhx who is the best in the MX 440 has 0 point. But will Hwbot create a new ranking (as for MSI Extrem Speedster), in order to rank the MX440 separately?

I do not know what will be the stage 2 in February, and depending on the hardware that will imply stage 2, this new ranking will be useful or useless, I mean if GeForces 4 are included or not in stage 2. Except if you create for each stage of the Hwbot OC challenge both high-end and low-end rankings.

Cheers,

January 7, 2010 at 11:46:46 AM UTC

The idea of the oc challenge is to have one stage a month, not two or subrankings or anything like that. If we start doing this, we end up having to split up the competition in a number of rankings equal the the amount of hardware categories we have ... which makes it too chaotic an uninteresting.

The reason why the chosen platform is so old is to allow interested people to go to ebay and find a card to participate ;-)

January 7, 2010 at 11:58:34 AM UTC

Ok that's perfectly clear, so we can already say that MX440 will have no point ;)

Do you have any financial interest in ebay ??? Juste a joke ;)

January 7, 2010 at 12:21:27 PM UTC

Buying a GF3 also has no point ;).

I mean ... it's a competition ... it's not "make-everyone-feel-like-a-winner"-day :D

January 7, 2010 at 6:58:18 PM UTC

I think C2D is only faster because the transfer rate from AGP to CPU (NB bottleneck) is much higher. For instance, on my XP platform, I see no scaling from increasing the CPU frequency, but huge scaling when I increase the FSB frequency.

Installed the voltage modifications ... let's see how high this card goes on air cooling :-)

January 7, 2010 at 10:49:42 PM UTC

mr. scott. could you share how you raised the voltage on your socket a processor? Ive been searching the web, my a7n8x-vm doesnt have the option in the bios, i must resort to pin mod.

At this point I dont know if its my cpu or motherboard holding me back. anything over 178mhz fsb or 2517mhz cpu speed. maybe more voltage or maybe its fsb... i read the 166fsb xp 3200+ chips didnt support higher fsb speeds?

January 7, 2010 at 11:05:09 PM UTC

It's most definitly the FSB; I saw quite a difference between 240 and 250MHz.

Btw, I just hit 2200 :D

January 8, 2010 at 12:11:00 AM UTC

my a7n8x-vm doesnt have the option in the bios, i must resort to pin mod.

I'm afraid that's your only option for that board.:(

January 8, 2010 at 12:34:18 PM UTC

Installed the voltage modifications ... let's see how high this card goes on air cooling :-)

GPU

325MHz - stock (1.77V?)

330MHz - 1.8V

345MHz - 1.9V

355MHz - 2.03V

360MHz - Black screen at any voltage

=> 357MHz at 2.05V; GPU ~ 35°C load

It seems that I'm hitting a wall at around 360MHz I can increase the voltage over 2.1V, but it doesn't help me get it more stable.

MEM

566MHz - stock (3.45V?)

600MHz - 3.55V

610MHz - 3.66V (with artifacts)

615MHz - 3.6V (heavy artifacts)

=> 620MHz at 3.6V; MEM ~ 50°C load

620MHz isn't always stable and I have heavy visual artifacts. The score still scales upwards, so ... I'm fine with it. Increasing the voltage up even further doesn't help, so I guess the only thing left to do is decrease the temperatures

January 8, 2010 at 1:03:24 PM UTC

GPU :

325Mhz : stock ( 1.66v )

330Mhz : 1.75v blackscreen / crash

330Mhz : 1.82v blackscreen / crash

330Mhz : 1.90v No boot ! xD

MEM :

610Mhz : Stock (3.50v)

At this point I dont know if its my cpu or motherboard holding me back. anything over 178mhz fsb or 2517mhz cpu speed. maybe more voltage or maybe its fsb... i read the 166fsb xp 3200+ chips didnt support higher fsb speeds?

Have a Athlon XP 2200+ and a A7V600-X and runs on 1.8V Vcore stable. I set on board a jumper to overvolt, then is 1.6-1.8V available.

Btw, Massman, why nothing stated in rules about awards for winners?

Almost none of small competitions have even a word about rewards :)

I mean not 10000$ prizes, but simple things like trophy or cup for first TOP5 members.

This will get more people , competitive idea, battle for trophy , you know. Not only just for geeks who can mess with ancient videocards.

I mentioned this: "These challenges will not feature big money prizes, but the winner does get a special achievement award" in the newspost :).

Not top-5 of course, only the winner gets an achievement ;)

Sorry guys I just gather my last 2 liters of LN2 and I manage to squeeze 2909 valuable point on same setup. Because 2899 looks like a incapable score and I don't use backups.

Now really I'm retired and watching you. Good luck to everyone.

which geforce 4 are you using?

is it running with agp 4x/8x or "PCI"? if it's running with "PCI" you need to install the chipset/agp drivers. ;)
