Buildzoid is back again with another video that aimed to educating those of us who have yet to really master the darker arts of Extreme Overclocking. On his latest video he offers a basic tutorial on the topic of VRMs (Voltage Regulator Module), the part of a motherboard or graphics card that is actually responsible for delivering smooth, steady power to other key components such as the GPU, CPU and memory.

Modding the VRM of a graphics card to enhance its power delivery chops can be a hit or miss thing if you don’t know what you’re doing. Such was a case with one of Buildzoid’s buddies who managed to fry pretty much all the components of his Radeon HD 7970 while trying to add capacitors. The video pretty much explores the reasons why that particular mod didn’t work and the techniques involved with preventing similar failed mods from happening in future.

The tutorial brings in two overclocking tools which some of us may not be so familiar with; oscilloscopes and mulitimeters. As we see in the video, even fairly budget versions of these devices can be massively useful when trying to identify what’s going with a VRM, where to add the capacitors and just how much those caps have altered the power delivery.
