Our weekly injection of nostalgia is upon us again as we arrive at another Throwback Thursday. This week we recall a day back in 2013 when a bunch of (largely) Australian overclockers managed to bust past the DDR3-4400 barrier, a landmark achievement that represented basically the fastest memory configuration ever recorded at that time.

The date was August 9th 2013 and Team AU had managed to push a Hynix MFR-based DDR3 G.SKILL TridentX kit to an astonishing 2,200MHz (13-31-31-45). The platform used was based on a Core i7 4770K that was underclocked to 1,801, installed on an ASUS Maximus VI Impact motherboard. Here’s what Massman had to say back in 2013:

“Hynix MFR does not have an easy life in the world of overclocking. Many, including yours truly, complain about the lack of performance a single-sided highly overclocked kit brings to the table. Especially in combination with the usually very high price tag, it's sometimes hard to thumbs up an MFR-based benchmark result.”

“But then again, this Hynix MFR overclocks so magically high! TeamAU just uploaded the first-ever over DDR3-4400 and set another milestone for DDR3 memory. Using a single stick of G.SKILL TridentX, the Taiwan-based memory vendor will surely be pleased to take back the memory frequency record. Well done!”

As mentioned in the quote above, MFR memory was/is a slightly controversial topic as memory vendors can sell single-sided kits that clock incredibly well for a massive premium, while the kit itself actually shows relatively muted performance levels. A fact summarized here in some detail a month earlier.
