The lid finally came off the new Pascal architecture cards from Nvidia with an (almost) full disclosure of the new GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cards from the company on Friday night. Nvidia held good old fashioned live steamed press event with CEO presentation Jen-Hsun Huang getting up on stage to wave around his latest company’s latest creation. Now that we know a little more about the new Pascal chip and the GTX 1080, including information about its overclocking capabilities, there’s plenty of reasons to smile.

The new GeForce GTX 1080 from Nvidia replaces the 980Ti and Titan X as the company’s flagship consumer graphics card. Details include a base clock of 1,607MHz, boosting to 1,733MHz (all nice high numbers compared to the 980 Ti that boosted to 1,216MHz). The card ships with 8GB of 10Gbps GDDR5X memory, has a TDP of 180W and will be available in the channel as May 27th for around $600 USD. In terms of performance and overclocking capabilities, it seems the GTX 1080 has plenty of potential due to its more efficient 16nm FinFET manufacturing process. Clock speeds shown by Nvidia during the live demo showed card being capable of hitting clock speeds of 2,100Mhz, while maintaining a relatively cool 67 °C. If this is to be believed, it should mean that a) overclockers are going to have a lot of fun benching this card, and b) AMD is could be in with a major headache if their competing Polaris GPU series fails to make the grade when it launches in the next few weeks.
