Turrican, staff member at HWBOT, has passed away

The news has yet to sink in properly and it is with great pain and disbelief I am writing this item.

Turrican, Karl, has passed away last night as the result of a car accident. Karl was a key member of our staff for a very long time and will be missed in every sense of the word. His dedication to and passion for overclocking are very visible at the bot where he held the title of Hardware King for a long time. As a staff member Karl managed the hardware database. He was a strong and silent force in the team, dedicating his free time to the project asking for very little in return.

Karl, you will be missed so much.

Below a picture of one of the overclocking events he attended a couple of years ago.

Austria _mat_ says:

I have very sad news for the overclocking world. Our fellow legend Turrican had a deadly car accident yesterday morning. His death was confirmed this evening, we are still in shock and speechless. The bot was a big part of his life, so I thought you should know. This is a sad day for overclocking ... The craziest and by far the most dedicated overclocker I've ever known of is now gone. A very sad day :(

Denmark M.Beier says:

Christian Ney sent me the link to this thread just moments ago... Strangely I hope its a sick twisted joke, and not real..... Karl was very dedicated, and always friendly, though it seems he did not consider me a friend, I appreciate the times I got to talk with him about hardware, it is the same sense as talking with Knut, HW never becomes boring. Turrican made me bench several times without even realizing it himself, his enthusiasm pushed one to strive for the better acheivements. A big loss for OC enthusiasm, a big loss for Hwbot R.I.P. Turricanator

Rest in peace, Karl. My sincerest condolences to the family and friends

After discovering this cruel news, I went through some pictures and video footage of the 2. PCGH-EOS. I remember how lucky I felt to finally meet him in person back in 2010. He had his own bench setup there, but did not hesitate to help other overclockers and was giving advices. On this day he also won the contest with a brilliant performance. Around that time Karl was also an interviewee as Hardware Master talking about his great passion overclocking.

Gone, but never forgotten ... :(

All of his submissions had long gone anyway, this was after he stopped benching, maybe about 2 years ago now or coming up to that anyway.

Germany Hyperhorn says:

Antinomy said: Any video with that interview? I'd want to see or read this.
Unfortunately it's only a small interview and text only, because it was embedded in a print article about the history of CPU overclocking. It was done in February 2011. In case you stumple upon a weird wording then it's my fault because I've translated it from German into English. Q: You are "Hardware King" at Hwbot since a long time. What is behind the title and what does it mean to you? A: This award states that you have overclocked many different hardware and know how to handle it. I'm proud to carry this award and to have collected experience with different platforms. Q: Does overclocking old hardware require more effort than recent hardware? A: Partly, yes. Volt mods on the motherboard are often needed so that the processor receives the desired voltage. Q: How many CPUs have you destroyed due to overclocking? A: Around ten pieces, most of them socket A/370 CPUs. Q: What OC result impressed you the most? A: Overclocking my Celeron 566 by 173 % to 1,548 MHz. (Hyperedit: This one) Q: What incident in the history of overclocking impressed you the most? A: The break-trough of the 1 GHz barrier with the AMD Athlon. Q: How is CPU overclocking going to change in the upcoming years? A: I think it's going to be easier as the mainboards offer more and more profiles, options and aids in the BIOS menu. By the way that's Karl as smiling winner after the award ceremony at the 2nd PCGH-EOS in August 2010. It was never published anywhere because it was blurred due to the lack of basic photo skills at a late hour. Oh well ... :(
