Rumour: New socket to replace LGA1366 due in 2011

Another socket ... why can't Intel use the same 'socket-policy' as AMD? An easy CPU upgrade path instead of a forced full system upgrade.

Here’s a quick bit of overheard info for you – Intel’s replacement for its current high-end Core i7 CPU range will arrive in Q3 2011, so if you’re planning an LGA1366 upgrade now (perhaps with a Core-i7 930) then it’s still got plenty of life left in it. The bad news is, there will be no compatibility between current LGA1366 Core i7s and the new socket. Intel is planning on launching a new socket for every new major CPU revision as it’s continuing to incorporate more and more features into future CPUs, which means pin-counts and sockets will inevitably change.

Maybe it sounds too much as a rumour to be true ... I really hope so.

Norway knopflerbruce says:

I would think 1156 should be replaced instead, that's the one that has burn issues:D

Belgium Massman says:

1156 will be replaced even earlier than 1366 :-/

Speak of the devil... my Intel Core i3 540 sample got some... burnmarks a few days ago :(
I thought this was an issue of the past, especially when it comes to stock cooling & clocks.

p.s. AFAIK Core i9 = LGA1366, more Core i3s & i5s are coming to LGA1156.

What will Sandy Bridge bring ? I don't know any details regarding the socket.

are you sure about that?

Belgium Massman says:

I thought 1156 was going to be replaced by 1155 in Q1 '11? Or I must be mistaken.

Norway knopflerbruce says:

I thought the pin count was low enough already:p (if that's one of the reasons there are problems with that platform)

Russian Federation NeoForce says:

Massman, you`re right 1156 will be replaced by 1155 in Q4.2010/Q1.2011 And 1366 will be replaced in 2011 by Socket (you won`t believe) 2011 =) Quad-channel memory and 8/10 cores
