Old School is Best School Season 3 Round 2

Welcome to the Old school is Best School Season 3, a contest series created specifically for overclockers that enjoy benching on very old, classic hardware. Each month-long round features three stages, each with unique hardware and benchmarks.
In Round 2 of the Old School is Best School contest overclockers are invited to bench on the fondly remembered AMD Socket 939 platform. These CPUs can be coupled with classic GeForce 7 series graphics cards from Nvidia (multi-GPU configurations allowed). Benchmarks include Cinebench 11.5 in Stage 1 (divided by core count), 3DMark Ice Storm in Stage 2 and the ASUS-developed RealBench in Stage 3. Verification screenshots and system pictures are required for each stage.

3DMark Ice Storm
To start the support thread, I received feedback that Realbench can give trouble to some contestants.
Please bench with internet connection active bencause save file does not work, you have to submit directly after benchmark. Would also like to have feedback on open CL and compability issue, I know geforce 7 works as I tested it on new gen asrock board, but if you see problems, this is right place people can share experience on this
Works fine for me, but its really hard to find a spot where the CPU is stable... Especially bad if the benchmark crashes during the last test, after what feels like an hour of running
Points are not being totaled correctly on the overview page.
S939 Opterons allowed? Seems like we already have some entries with those. (I hope you say yes, if so please add a line about it to the limitations)
Yes, Opterons are allowed for this special competition
Yes
We had agreed on this , in the preparation thread
http://forum.hwbot.org/showthread.php?t=160802
We have to make clear now , that we are at the beggining of this round , about the wallpaper beeing used.
Should we have drama in case the little R2 logo (at the left side) doesnt show on the validation screenshot ???
Except one or two , most of the results till now , have this problem.
How will the moderators handle this ?
I cannot even see the r2 at full scale without maginfying glass, so I don´t care^^
I didn't even know it was there. lol
I guessed , that many people didn't know either.
That's why i made this post.
Round 1 , wallpaper had a small R1 at the top left corner.
Now the R2 , is still at the left side , down lower.
Anyway
I would something like a hwbot staff formal statement about this wallpaper issue , just in case someone reports a result , for not using the official wallpaper for the exact round.
Someone could assume , that there are other members already benching later round stages and show them on-time.
Because if the "R" marking doesnt count , i can start benching for whatever round and stage i wont , whenever i like.
Then i can crop the screenshot , or even change the system date , to match the stage date.
Am i wrong ?

There seems to be some problem with nvidia 7 series cards (havent tested any other series) that they always award 14726 points in OpenCL. All submitet results so far got that score and Ive recived it with both a 7900gtx and a 7200gt
Not to mention that those DFI boards are known for being grumpy with 4GB ram
Ohh and good thing you mentioned that save file problem.. I didnt check how to submit so only saved a screenshoot.. glad there is plenty of time to rerun.
Question about OpenCL error, is it ok with a run where we get a score but this error for OpenCL instead of it showing ksample/sec? Ive had it all my runs and I see that 2 of the 3 submited scores got it as well.
@TASOS I will not remove any submission because of r1 background used. I will propose a change at background, maybe r3 bigger for next round, but it was nearly impossible to see that 1 and 2 background had difference, I will not blame ocers for this. @lanbonden as long as I get a point status for the test and the general result, this is ok for me. With the point cap at open cl, this might be system related or open cl, I can assure you that on new gen with 7800gtx I scored higher at this test and results vary
With no OpenCL support looks like 14726 is it. Tried 1, 2 & 3 cards as will as 2.43 & 2.44, same score for OpenCL. Best score was with a 7950 X2 for the same clocks on the CPU & RAM but based on 1 run could be nothing more than back ground noise.
Dont loose your time testing.
No Cuda support , no open cl.
Period
We needed nvidia 8 series and up , for this.
ar we alowed to run older 3dmark versions?
From what i know , things are clear about the rules
HWBOT 3DMark Ice Storm Benchmark Validation Regulations
"Multi-GPU allowed" It will be a big boost for.... I mena err.... It will be good for... For the rig pic !!!
Sorry for the noob question. What's the cure for "Program files modified or corrupted" error during Realbench run?
edit - Mybad, was still in diag mode. All good now. Thx!
edit2 - Scratch that, error still occurring...
If you disabled some services in the OS from starting that will cause it, these are mainly web related services - I'm not exactly sure which ones they are but I've ran into this after disabling some and re-enabling them solved it. If you slimmed down the install then you may have to run a standard OS install until you figure out exactly what services it's wanting and retweak the OS copy you are using for this bench.
I ran into this not more than an hour ago and that's how I figured it out, at least what I had causing it - I"m just not sure ATM which ones it is specifically but I will figure it out eventually.
EDIT:
As you said, scratch that last.
I just did a complete reinstall of the OS without changing anything in the install, GPU drivers installed and all was the same as the last time it ran fine yet it threw the error this time around. It's almost like either 939 just has a hard time with it or something - Really hard to say.
"Houston , we have a setup down"
DFI NF4 SLI + Opteron 180
I've "lost" my current setup , during Realbench.
I've left it run the bench , cause it takes some time ... and after an hour , when i got back to check , i found it on a black screen with blinking cursor.
Shut down and new power up.
System keeps restarting all over again and again.
Clear cmos didnt help , neither one mem module only did.
I have a bad feeling that it needs more than basic troubleshooting.
It appears something goes sideways when copying over the RealBench files to the bench machine. My solution was to copy over the zip file and then extract it locally. Working now.
Oh Mate, I really sorry !
Do You know is it cpu or board ?
I wrote this yesterday to Bones :
"Good luck to You as well ! I wish all of us have good time, strong runs. Anyway, don't You think these benchmarks are anything but not for s939.
Poor little chips.
Like we doing linx on them. I hope no one will have dead chip till the end. Pay attention on temps ! So, up for the competition now !! "
I can't say enough time that how grateful I am to Hwbot staff (and the community also
) organizes these nice competitions for us so but also feel bad when any have loss of some irreplaceable old stuff.
Ok, it can be happen anytime all of us have accepted it I think but maybe we shouldn't forcing this.
I've thought my Ultra-D was dead a few times, but it keeps bouncing back. It's extremely sensitive to pressure around the CPU socket, so try to alleviate that as much as possible. Maybe try introducing some brief and slight flex to the PCB. I also find sometimes if I just give it a day off, it's good to go again. G'luck!
Overview board still not totaling correctly.
Saw that happen too with file extraction from the zip file.
Extracted the folder on my DD and sent it to a flashdrive, took the drive out to the shack and copied it to the bench setup.
ATM it's working again so I guess I've finally got it sorted.... Until next time of course.
I see miracles happening in some RealBench Multithreading scores.
I hope this miracles are legit.
I've been experimenting. I can tell you right now that some of these miracles are not legit. Problem will be, as always, proving it. Asus's own tweak list for this bench is not legal for HWB under the current HWB rules.
IMO, Realbench is very flawed and should not be given points under any circumstance. It's PCM05 II.
I've done some work too Scotty.
Tell me your opinion about asking the participants , to show the whole (and more maximized ... and not screenshot cut) window of the log output , as a beggining.
Any other thoughts are welcome.

Rule reminder
Yea this boosted "heavy multitasking" really have got me wondering as well as the boost there is worth some 1000+ higher total score
I've had one test run where Encoding & Heavy Multitasking were both over 18000 on a fresh OS install (about the 3rd or 4th). Had some
BIOS problems and it will not reproduce at present. I'm guessing it wasn't tested for 939 platforms so could have a hiccup or two or our systems maybe a little tried after all the runs on them.
After this is over would be interesting to know what was used to kick up the scores.
Never have liked the bench that much, dislike advertisements although the newer one is better than the first.
Rule reminder tells me that we are on the same page my friend.
The tweak is not all that complicated... it's basic priority stuff
Just think about XTU and you'll find the tweak... I can assure that all files are 100% stock
And yes Realbench is a crap benchmark, just like XTU and PCM imo...
Changing resolution changes the rendering also. No files involved, and no way to prove that it was changed.
Everything is run at 1050p without any driver tweaks... And yes I know there is no way to prove that...
If nobody else publishes the tweak, i'll make a tutorial on it
After the challenge of course
I think I have it.
Thank you for being accommodating though. It is appreciated.
When Frank suggested the benchmark to be used we had more or less a promise it would be reworked because we found tons of holes in it especially at realbench challenge - nothing happened, one of the rare occasions hwbot is not to blame...
So we are free to abuse the "heavy multitasking" score? Or should I focus on geting a legit run as the abusing scores will be deleted?
This is a good question, wanted to post anyway - you all can tweak the heavy mt for this contest as we now have already a lot of subs with this, I want same chances for all and easy work for me, if I see some "tweaks" at test 1 or 2, I will block because on these there is not even a grey zone. On test 4, I will accept certain limits bc there are several ways to boost this
I may have discovered a tweak for #1 which has to be 100% legal, since it's basically hardware, not software
Will post more about this once i have verified my theory
Why would you want quad sli anyways? The framerate is mostly limited by memory bandwith in this bench i think
I understand that quad sli is fun, but this bench doesnt even suport sli so no use trying
Do You think this java thing doesn't scaling good for multi gpus ?

i can't submit in this old school season 3?
Depends on if you use correct hardware and for realbench you need to bench with internet enabled so you can submit directly after benchmark, save file doesnt work.
there is no button for submit
For me there is, a big red button on top that says "open for submissions" and when you move the cursor to it, it says "submit" - can you make a screenshot of your eocsports stage page for oldschool ? We also have plenty of submissions already, so it might be a bug of your rig or browser...
there was also yesterday the submission button, but when I pressed it gave me the popup window without any additional button for 3 benchmark
now there is.
Thanks
Got me some more stuff to throw at the round
Can we not ever never never use Real Bench again for Old School competitions. It's over 30 minutes of mind numbing boredom with the hardest test at the end, so you have to wait a long time for the inevitable system crash.
I made the mistake of getting 2 GX2's when I saw the rules on multi GPU's only to find 3D Mark Ice Storm hates Crossfire. Took a while to get them working in 4 way as well, then I saw the score :-(
How I can fix it? It's TOLEDO ! Now I can't participate in competition. Always same problems with this f... reakin validation files/uploads.
http://hwbot.org/submission/3450019_
Sorry, I'm drunk. It was easy.... :F
I have problem with gpuz and 7900 gtx, when i open gpuz my vga make artifact and i do restart.
Can I post with a different vga program?
edit
Try with a different version of GPUz, 1.16 worked for me this time, but I have had problems with old nvidia GPUs before and 0.82 is the last version that "always" works even on old cards with all drivers I have tested.
In the third round (RealBench) of the competition no video card is not specified, but a point of speaking to use two video cards as well, the bench is not only important for performance of the cpu level?
thanks man, 0.82 work fine
What am i doing wrong here ?
or is it a database problem ?
My result doesnt show up in the competition rankings
and in hardware rankings it shows as a 2X cpu.
I submitted twice
TASOS`s Cinebench - R11.5 score: 0.82 points with a Opteron 154 (San Diego, s939)
TASOS`s Cinebench - R11.5 score: 0.82 points with a Opteron 154 (San Diego, s939)
You are doing nothing wrong, it is a database issue which is still not fixed. I cannot edit it, and tbh I am tired of this
- will try to get this fixed again
What's model cpu cooling use?
Looks like a Zalman cnps7000c
It's a Zalman CNPS7700-CU
It's much bigger than the 7000 series.
Zalman CNPS7700: The New Giant of Coolers
... and it'a a pain in the @$$ , if you are using the orange mem slot's and wanna swap ram modules
Bonus point for era-appropriate cooler, though!
i try this beta real bench (win7)...save upload file (name file.rbr) when i load it i have error Invalid data file: Unable to parse the datafile...ok i try again to save this file, but menu save upload file not active...what to do now?
You need to bench with internet connection, save file does not work - you are doing nothing wrong, it is a flaw in the benchmark. Submit directly after benchmark works
perfect, realbench need opencl...wow!!
Thanks for a fun competition with some of my favorite hardware!
ohh, and great show from @Stelaras in the end, picking up 75 points!
ps, can we please never have realbench (and 3dmark ice storm) for retro hardware again

Michael I am wondering why you removed my Realbench submission when in the Limitations on the competition page there is no mention of what card you have to use.
On the Ice Storm page it specifies that a 7000 series Nvidea GPU has to be used.
I dont see why I cant use a Radeon card for Realbench it doesnt specify a GPU
Taken from the Limitations.
LIMITATIONS
Only use processors using socket 939.
Please attach a picture of your overclocking rig.
Must use official competition background: download
Opteron CPUs allowed
Multi-GPU allowed
It was a fun Stage anyway Congratulations to the Winners and all that participated.
Realbench is influenced by vga used, other than cinebench for example, so there was no choice. Maybe we should have stated Geforce 7 as well there, but it says
"In Round 2 of the Old School is Best School contest overclockers are invited to bench on the fondly remembered AMD Socket 939 platform. These CPUs can be coupled with classic GeForce 7 series graphics cards from Nvidia (multi-GPU configurations allowed)."
on same page which should make it clear. Sorry if this caused inconvenience
I understand Michael and yes it greatly boosts openCL but no card was mentioned in the limitations but was mentioned for Ice Storm.
So I am sure you can understand my confusion and why I used it I wasnt trying to cheat I just go by the rules on the page.
It was a misunderstanding, I am sure about this, maybe we overrated realbenchs popularity, the benchmark is new to lots of people it seems. It is a mixed bench like pcmark for example, which is why we also ask for GPUZ at verification screenshot because not only cpu but also vga influence final score
Great competition, I love that platform and next time I have to start benching before 3 days to deadline
I burnt a DFI Ultra-D and ripped off a pin from FX-60 trying to clean burnmarks, but it still works
Realbench is OK, but can't it be a bit shorter? 10 mins for encoding test is test for patience. Ice Storm - no idea, I wasted 4 hours trying to get SLI from 7900 GTX working and then I ran it with single GPU on default and moved on.
Couple of excellent results, stellar performance by Stelaras, well done!
I'd love to rebench this with proper preparation, so maybe we do similar round next year?
Nice scores everyone!
I wanted to participate, but had no time and also have more important things to sort out.
Hopefully I would be able to participate in some of the future competitions.
I wonder why noone ran 2x7900GTX. Was it limited by the platform, was it buggy, was it not scaling or smth else?
I have 3 of these, but didn't even had the time to mod 'em.
Mine didn't run at all and they appear gone - both of them are heavily artifacting.
Someone planned to do 2x7950GX2, but I also miss it.
congrats to all in the comp, well done guys, especially to stelaras, top runs man, and thx to the bot boys as well for running it, W9's Mr Paco for instigating the set up for the comp to start with
i tried 2 x 7900 gtx gpus in the venus but wouldnt see 1 card for some reason, tried everything, put the card in another board and no probs and away it went, but didnt like my board tho so ran with 1 card
Someone tried HyperSLI patch then? We were able to run SLI on a 790FX chipset, which does not support it officially.
Or some older driver?
I have SLI-DR and Expert boards. Also one Ultra-D with chipset modded to SLI-D, but haven't actually tried. Might do in the evening, since I had the board setup, just no time to run it.
Just wanted to ask here ...
Did this stage ended for all at the same time ???
For me it ended early in the morning at 2 o'clock
But i see that other were submitting just a couple of hours ago ...
Was there an extension ???
I would have finished my Realbench
I noticed too there was a strange clock on the general page, like 12 hours more left compared to the counters on the stages.
Basically it seems we had half a day extra, but not sure if just for this stage.
Congrats everyone on another fun OSIBS round! Especially Stelaras - what a dominant performance! Good on you, sir! This round was haaaarrrd - Ice Storm and Realbench were beasts.
In response to InfraRed... for my part, tried to SLI Ice Storm with 2 x 7900GTX, 2 x 7950GT and 1 x 7950GX2 on an Ultra-D (with SLI mod), SLI-DR and A8N32-SLI. In every case, no matter the drivers used, SLI scores were lower than single card scores. The scaling of the benchmark as a whole remains a mystery to me. My 7900GTX scores just would not increase at all with any GPU core or memory increases. Only my 7950GT scores would go up, and even then, not by much. It seems to be more of a memory benchmark to be honest. And in that department, my TCCDs can't do the 2-2-2's like BH-5 or maybe stronger TCCD kits can do, so yeah...
Killed my Ultra-D in the process, but was able to bake my previously-dead SLI-DR back to life. So I guess I came away even-Steven. Think the Ultra-D needs to be recapped, so hopefully it's only mostly dead.
Thanks for the confirmation.
At least i know i'm not crazy ... seeing things on my own.
What more can i say ?
I did the moderation with handbrake on especially for stage 3, result is final from my side but as long as realbench gets no fix it will not be used again for any competition as long as I can stop it. No offline saving, only cpuz shown as mandatory by program when you save plus several bugs within the program need a fix or it will not have a future here, sorry that I have to say it this clearly..
On the clock issue, I already got a heads up yesterday and checked at 1 in the night, timer resetted to another 12 hours more, it was shown correctly at the lower side of the pages where remaining time also was sown. Still this is something that should not happen because it irritates people and can influence outcome of the competition.
Grats to the winners, it was a great race nontheless
In total , it was an interesting round
Cinebench was a bit brutal , especially for the single-core cpu's
But it was do able.
Ice Storm , was something new (for the hardware used) and i would dare to say , that it was the most interesting stage (for me).
Almost every aspect of tuning , was giving it a tad more in final score.
RealBench on the other hand , almost killed all the fun of this round.
It was tooo lengthy for the capabilities of the hardware.
It was not easy to overcome the disappointment of the last minute failed bench session.
The non-saving score was also a big minus.
... and its final score , was not the result of hardware tuning.
It's software tweaking (the most) ... and i hate these kind of benchmarks.
//
I may have complaints about this weird competition ending time ... but all in all it was fun.
I didnt have the clocks to compete in higher level.
and i dont take risks (anymore) with sub-zero cooling , on old hardware , cause it's not easily replacable nowadays.
At least , i think i got the highest GT2 score of all , to remember.
Especially for my clocks and cooling.
... and i found , that i have a small X2 that can do 312 1/1 on mem (air-cooled).
Congrats to all !!!
There were some very good scores on top places !!!
See you next round.
Congrats to all.
I did try to run 7950 gx2 skulstation`s 3DMark - Ice Storm score: 15777 marks with a GeForce 7950 GX2 and 2x 7950 gx2 skulstation`s 3DMark - Ice Storm score: 14439 marks with a GeForce 7950 GX2
but the 2x 7950 gx2 was slower than a singel 7950 gx2
I agree 100% on the realbench part, I think that benchmark should never be used again for hardware older than 1st i7 generation...
I spent at least 2 days worth figuring out the tweaks, and getting the file to save, and get the benchmark not to say files corrupted... Beyond that it still has the Pcmark feel to it, not as bad but i'd put it somewhere inbetween XTU and PCM05 in therms of beeing a mess that spits out scores based more on software than hardware
(No offense to people who like that type of benchmarks, but I'm surely not one of them)
Cinebench was also a pain in the ass for singlecore, I had the benchmark run several times and couldn't screenshot it, because the process that was essential for interrupts (ie keyboard and mouse) crashed due to realtime priority, I then set the system up in a way, that it would shut down after 30 min, so that I had mouse and keyboard when fired up again
Ice Storm sure was fun, but i think it was too much of a memory benchmark, so in essence there was not a single "real" 3D bench in this round, which I think is quite sad...
Oh and can someone please tell me if there is any trick to fix hte coldbug on 939 CPUs, because my results got worse on every single chip below ~-10 to -20°C
Well, other then high fsb = worse coldbug there aint much to do about it as far as I know. Thats why I had to run with 15x multi on my FX-60 even if it hurt memory performance alot.
Thinking about it after the runs I should have gone with higher fsb and lower clock for 3dmark ice storm. But I got kind of stressed from knowing that I was runing out of dice after to much time in realbench so I only had time for a few runs 3dmark.
This unfortunalely only works on FX, i'd still like to know what Stelaras has done to get his Opteron 180 to 300 FSB... maybe the CPUs that are worse on air are better on cold... i'll definetly rebinn the 5 Opterons I got on SS
Sometimes bad air chips fly on LN2 with really unexpectedly low CB. You should test all your CPUs on clod, no matter if they are bad on air.
Well, this applies to less extent for lower multi chips like 3000+ and 3200+. I haven't found a single one that has an extraordinary low CB. And they need high FSB, so if they are really bad on air, then won't do much on LN2. By much I mean to break the records for these CPUs.
Generally a CB around SS temps (-45/-50) is considered very good.
One of these bad-air-good-on-LN2 is my 3800+ Venice. It could not even do 3GHz on air, but has -98C coldbug which is insane for these: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Venice) @ HWBOT
So if Stelios' Opteron has a nice coldbug around even -40, then it will fly. For example my 180 has a CB around -8 and does ~3.3GHz for CB11.5.
There are some other tricks for single core CPUs, but they don't help much. You can't lift that CB. You can only try to somehow increase temperature even on idle, because that's where it bugs mostly. When loaded it can usually do higher clock, due to the higher temperature.
Which you compensate with voltage.
PS: Unlocked chips (a.k.a FX) is best to be clocked with multi and low FSB (~225 max) and 250 divider for mem. This way you can get much lower on temperature, which translates to higher core clocks, but you all know that.
Seems like it was a mistake to think air binning is the way to go with these chips...
3000+ and 3200+ I didn't even look at them, assuming they're crap... the only chips i took into consideration as far as singlecores go were 3500+ and opteron 148 and up
Ah, for this competition CPUs with 512KB L2 cache were not that good, although I bet my 3.7GHz Venice would do fine.
But 3000 and 3200 were a no go for sure, I was talking in general.
For this competition you were looking for nice scaling San Diego 3700/4000, FX-55/57 San Diego for Cinebench, for others a X2 was needed - basically higher bin Opterons and FX-60. Perhaps some Toledo, Manchester and Clawhammer would do fine as well, but they are slower clock for clock. FX Clawhammer and even 4000+ have lower CB and being 130nm can take higher voltage, but are a little slower than San Diego.
Some other CPUs would do good also, but these were the best choices.
The trick to improve CB , they already told you here.
Now , the real thing to ask these guys here , is to tell you some exact FPO/BATCH , that fly in cold.
Congratulations to all, beautiful round, i saw great scores.I was lucky in the second stage thanks to the excellent driver suggested by Mat_Agnesi but unlucky in general because my opteron has bad cold bug around zero degrees.
I don't buy single chips bay batch, I guess i'll just bin every s939 on SS to see where CB is, instead of going for max frequency on air...
Batches help only if buying single chips, not if you buy your chips per kilo, like I do, i'll just hope i find a decent one for the next time 939 comes up in an oldschool competition
That's a good tactic
I would have followed your method (if i had it as an option in my local market).
Can you send me a couple of kilo's (fx55 and fx57) ?
Unfortunaly i have never found any etreme chips like FX or Extreme Edition P4 or QX... Most of the chips you'll get this way are either mainstream or server chips, that's why I only had Opterons for this round... and about 30 3200+ which are most likely crap
My 154 looks awesome. Did Cinebench run easily at 3560 @ 1.5V with a eeak ss. Load temp was + 3-4 degree. I'm going to test it colder soon. My 165 is the opposite type. Had to keep the water temp over +10 unless it stopped.
Hah ... and i thought i had the worst cpu ever , with a CB at 0C
