GIGABYTE Mini ITX and highly overclockable memory!

A few days ago, we already reported about the first overclocking results on the GIGABYTE GA-H55N-USB3 mainboard. What made it so special is not the absolute frequency, but the size of this mainboard. Being µITX, there's a lot less room than on a, let's say, X58A-UD9 to add components to make overclocking work.

Australian overclockers Dinos22 and Youngpro are currently testing the overclocking capabilities of the board and especially the latter has shown that this board is capable of a lot more than meets the eye. Just check out the screenshots: DDR3-2420 CL7 with B2B=0 ... that's a lot of bandwidth. Also, it looks like the board's definitely doing well in terms of SuperPI 32M efficiency.

Of course, this is all very nice, but it also makes me wonder why all of us overclockers are buying the large mainboards for overclocking purposes. Talking with a lot of top overclockers, most of them say that for non-3D benching purposes a smaller sized mainboard would be more "an overclocker's board" than any of those XXL boards. Facts are facts: do you prefer a €100 board or a €500 board for SuperPI records if the efficiency is the same on both? Well, if the absolute CPU overclockability is roughly the same ... I know my answer.

Belgium Massman says:

There's the PWM load, of course, that is making a huge difference with those XXL boards. But still ... if this kind of boards can get memory running this high, I'm sure there's room to tune the PWM for higher load as well.

Russian Federation Antinomy says:

GIGABYTE :) First it was the DFI Junior, then Asus Genie and now it's Gigabyte who makes overclockable mini-ITX boards.

Belgium Massman says:

Time to have a performance per cm² competition :D

TaPaKaH says:

what now?
gigabyte marketing employees/overclockers will hype this board to be better clocking than their UD7, lol ?

with 1156 there aren't much board-related factors that affect memclocking.
what we see here is just a cpu with strong imc and a very very nicely binned memory kit

Belgium Massman says:

Okay ... so it's a challenge then. - MaxxMem - µITX - Lynnfield - GIGABYTE GA-H55N-USB3 - DFI LANparty MI P55-T36 - Zotac H55-ITX WiFi - Point of View H57-Ci3 - Ecs Elitegroup H55H-I - Intel DH57JG If it's all marketing, you can beat it with any of these boards :D

Belgium leeghoofd says:

Time to show colours Sam :p

Latvia aspms* says:

just give him CPU with better IMC than that :D

Belgium Massman says:

I'll cut him some slack and agree with 2200CL7 runs :D

United States steponz says:

That was also just on air though? no?

TaPaKaH says:

PJ, you have completely missed my point.
What I was trying to say is that this board is needlessly overengineered and needlessly overhyped.
uATX users won't need all of the OC options and will never come close to these marketing frequencies
Benchers/overclockers who want/need H55 will just save their nerves and a couple of bucks and go with a "larger" mATX version.

P.S. If you want a Maxxmem heads up - I'm always ready to kill some Elpida Hyper with a proper H55/P55 board :D

Belgium Massman says:

Ah, I see. Well, I don't mind manufacturers doing things like this. In fact, I tend to like this kind of engineering more than adding just another high-end board to the line-up. I like it so much that I'm actually considering a µITX challenge in the near future ...

United States steponz says:

Yeah.. why not.. a board I can travel with.. Not sure where I am going to put the LN2 though......

having a board like is a nice to have.. and is probably an all around strong board... Count me in.. I want one..

Time to get another comp together on these boards... :) no bs this time though...

United States steponz says:

Also.. why wouldn't this be good for a starter board?? has to be a decent price.. for a 2d bencher...

United States steponz says:

It would be better with seperate dual core ratings.. this way it opens up league to boards like this... otherwise why bench it? no?

Australia Dinos22 says:

nice miniITX challenge hey
im in woot heheheh

wow this sounds like alot of fun, im in for some mitx challenge

Argentina Pekalion says:

Maybe a Transformers? "... more than meet the eye." :P Beside of the easy joke, pff, that is a HUGE number for mems, so tiny yet powerful. Looks small, frags more.
