Der8auer Unboxes, Strips and Volt-Mods an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti

Our buddy Roman ‘der8auer’ Hartung has just published an unboxing video of the very latest and soon to be available Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti card. Unfortunately the NDA still holds sway which means there is no disclosure of actual performance figures. However, in true Overclocking fashion Roman goes way past the standard unboxing script, stripping the new card down to its bare PCB to inspect the design and components used in the card's VRM while also showing us how to mod the card’s power target.

The GTX 1080 Ti officially launches within the next 24 hours or so, which means we should soon have plenty of raw data to chew over when comparing to the much more expensive Titan X Pascal card. Specifications gleaned so far suggest that the GTX 1080 Ti could be very close to its Titan brethren in terms of raw performance. We shall soon see.

In terms of the packaging and presentation of the new GTX 1080 Ti card, Nvidia have done a good job as usual. The box itself lends a premium feel to the product, as does the actual cooling design of the card. Roman notes that for the 1080 Ti Nvidia hs removed the DVI port and opted to use only DisplayPort and HDMI outputs. This means there’s more room for the exhaust area at the back of the card, a smart move in terms of airflow, allowing the fan to spin slower and create less noise.

Looking at the PCB, a quick strip down reveals that Nvidia have changed very little from the design of the Titan X Pascal. One memory chip has been removed (resulting in 11GB of DDR5X compared to 12GB on the Titan card) as well as the departing DVI port. The good news is that Titan X water blocks from EKWB and other vendors will also be compatible with the GTX 1080 Ti. Roman goes on to explain more about the card’s VRM design. He also shows us a very simple mod that alters the Power Target of the card, raising the power limit so you can push the GP102 chip that bit further.
