Do You Want Unlocked 12-core Xeons? Francois Wants To Know!

Francois Piednoel is the ever charismatic Intel rep who keeps us entertained with Tweets and forum posts. Just today, he posted the following message on Twitter:

At the moment of writing, only 6 people re-tweeted the message. For your information, the price of a 12-core Xeon E5-2697 v2 (Ivy Bridge-E) is EUR €2200. That is twice the price of a Core i7 4960X, but you also get twice the core count. What do you guys say?

Why make it 12 cores at once? Unlocked octacores will be just as interesting for enthusiasts when there are no unlocked 12-core chips around.

United States Splave says:

24 chances to have strong 2d core per chip :) sounds good to me...wait wut

IDK thats mad expensive!! I can see them creating a wicked ES black market even for half price.

Poland Xtreme Addict says:

Damm, it's too expensive. I can see SR4 board with 2x unlocked Xeon 12 cores ES on blackmarket for half price :D It's better to fix Hasfail VRM (or bury this project permanently) instead of creating overclockable Xeons :D

Shut. The. F*ck. Up.

Massman, can we ban him?:D:D

Germany der8auer says:

I would pay for it. Not kidding.

Norway knopflerbruce says:

I don't believe it. Everyone is asking for an unlocked 8 core. Like that's going to happen :p I'd rather have a 12...

Belgium leeghoofd says:

As long its technology is far from Hassfail then I could opt to sell a lung for it...

Australia Jimba says:

Ivy E 12 core xeon? :D

Greece FireKillerGR says:

would buy one as well :)

Belgium Massman says:

Anything is better than two unlocked 6-core skus ...

Belgium skulstation says:

i sell my wife for 2 :) jk
but yes if i had the money

Norway knopflerbruce says:

I'd trade my mother. I am NOT kidding.

Denmark zzolio says:

if I could stop buying hardware long enough to afford one then yes

United States Movieman says:

So a question about offerring a potential $2500.00 USD unlocked 12 core that will only work in single socket.
IE: Intel takes existing 12 cores, unlocks the multi and disables the 2nd QPI
Smart move for them, good business.
Of course it sucks that they won't offer the same damned chip with dual QPI enabled.
How could they ten sell their E7-8870 quad socket systems when you could do a dual socket system and smoke that quad socket.

Belgium Massman says:

Because not everyone wants to overclock?

Belgium Massman says:

295 retweets. That's a theoretical sale of well over half a million euro (or 800k usd) from one SKU. And I bet system integrators would build and sell "dream machines" with these.

4 hours ago – Because not everyone wants to overclock
-----------------------------------------------------
Think on it this way: A dual 12 core at app 3800-4000MHz will match
a quad socket E7-8870 at 2400MHz and still be well within the thermal limits with top air cooling,
The dualie costs say $8500.00 to build, the Quad E7-8870 costs at least $20,000.00 ( numbers in USD)
There's a lot of motivation for a company to want and learn to OC ... :-)

Fixed for ya ;)

Though there are the following options all in the same TDP:

Unlocked 6-core, highest MHz
Unlocked 8-core, mid MHz
Unlocked 10-core low MHz
Unlocked 12-core, lowest MHz

Sure making them unlocked throws TDP out of the window pretty much, would you rather have a fast CPU with few cores or a slow CPU with many cores. Would a 12 core help much with GPU benchmarks? Vantage gets worse over 12 threads for example

K404 says:

I say no for the simple reason that it creates another divide between contacts, bank balance and Joe Normal. Keep them locked, keep OC interest at zero. IMO, $3500 CPUs have no place here.

The difference between 6 and 12 cores in terms of MHz won't be that huge, unless there cores are different. You need better cooling the more cores you have, but that's about it. I did benchmark my 64 core server at 4700MHz using "only" 1.45v, on a mobo not designed for overclocking at all. Give me a 4P board with VRMs that can take 4x500w 24/7 (need a nice set of 8 or 6pin connectors on-board, too) and a single rail PSU rated at 2000+ W and I bet I'd see 5GHz on it easily.

There's also another thing to consider: a 12 core will be inferior to a 6 core in terms of speed when all cores are under heavy load, but say you run 6 threads on both... I can't imagine a huge difference in frequencies. More cores give more options, not less performance.

Iran Mehdi_FXX says:

I think everything is not more cores, ocers knows it as well because you have limitation but servers and super computers can use it in low clock. lol

Czech Republic buildzoid says:

a 12 core at 2000$ is a hard buy to justify but a 10 core at 1500$ +/- 100$ and I'd buy it as soon as I can afford it.

Australia Dinos22 says:

price is the big problem. we need intel to stick to sub $300 benching chips

Poland Xtreme Addict says:

Overall it sounds like Intel has too many Hasfail's RMA and needs new funds :D j/k

Belgium Massman says:

400 retweets, not bad

Germany Dancop says:

I would buy!

Poland Xtreme Addict says:

I can imagine how many of us will buy it with OC of 5.2-5.3 GHz on LN2 so it mean CRAP GPU score... if 2x cheaper Titan was a problem, be reasonable.

websmile says:

I would prefer unlocked pentiums instead of 12 core 5k cpu... problem is not that highend ocers have no matching hardware, but kids starting oc have no cheap options on this at newer Intel generations

Germany Moose83 says:

I want unlocked Dualcore Haswell :D

+1 for that! Or maybe haswell refresh... :P

United States Movieman says:

I want unlocked dual QPI 12 core IB xeons...:-)
Oh yea, for under $250.00 each!
