ASRock Z87 Comes With Waterproof Conformal Coating?
As I uploaded ASrock's latest banner sent to me yesterday, I stumbled upon this neat little logo on ASRock's Z87 micro-site. There is not much information available on the micro-site regarding the "Waterproof by Conformal Coating" feature - nothing at all, in fact - but the nomenclature seems straight-forward. It seems that the upcoming ASRock Z87 motherboards will come with a coating that will prevent hardware failure due to condensation.
Interesting? Or rather wait and see? I'm intruiged!

But they mean PCB only (not a big deal though) or even all componants and solderings?
Ultra Durable has humidity protection with the PCB design, not quite the same as using conformal coating. Gigabyte's solution is to reduce humidity inside the PCB, the coating is on top of the PCB.
So if I buy a board and pour a glass of water on it running and "for some reason" it dies - that's a legit RMA case now, right?

I was wondering a long time why vendors didn't use plastic spray for ln2 boards...
so we just need a ready-to-go insulation for empty-RAM Slots and so on ^^
they are pre vaselined out of the box
i think this feature was in discussion when the X58A-OC was in development, the issue was if you add a real layer of con formal coat over everything, well things overheat.... really think about the possibility of that....
Would be a nice feature tho! But you would still need to insulate everything else. I wonder how that waterproofing will work with multiple cycles of cold and heat? What about discoloration? What about fixing broken stuff? I mean when is the last time you coated your motherboard with insulation and then used it on air 24/7 with the coat and didn't worry?

Fan headers blowing up personal experience there bud? Seems as though you may be doing a bit to much back seat driving, and watching from the sidelines instead of actual overclocking.
Usually when I defrost the session is done, so who cares about water when thawing, you just let it sit for a few hours and you are ready to go again, not even sure why this was mentioned.
As for the de humidifier option, I have seen this in the bios but since I am actually overclocking I don't really bother with it, as it does not help max clocks, not even for bclk world records:p All of the retail boards I have had have solid readings for vdimm and vcore and others can verify so maybe check your dmm.
As for the false advertising about digital vs analog, I can agree but when it runs better than most other vendor's digital PWM how can you argue?
And tell me how any of these vendors have any interest in what is good for America or the American economy? Where do you think all of this money is going? Back in circulation in the US economy? Come on your smarter than that. As a corporation their best interest is in increasing profits, not what is best for the consumer and that is every company, not just Asrock so moot point imho.
And to err on the side of caution, I would still insulate the motherboard on top of the conformal just to be safe, and really pouring cola or deionized water? How about just benching the board and posting some results good or bad? I am sure we (the users) will figure out if this is marketing at it's finest or an actual good idea.
I know you have lots of hate for any vendor other than Gigabyte and that is ok with me, but I usually like to choose whoever has the fastest, easiest to bench boards (with proper bios support) regardless of brand so if everything is dialed on the Gigabyte like I keep hearing you will see me benching a Z87 OC X.

Ohh.. I just threw up in my mouth a bit, lookin at that photo. Thankfully, its dry enough where I live to bench with no real prep and minimal coverage of anything really. Vas in the RAM and PCI-E is a must for going cold on everything, still.. but the amount of vas in that pic is insanity. I dont want to ever live/bench somewhere where the amount of humidity is high enough to warrant that..

Just got down with the vas on the most recent Z77 OC Formula since there have been so many sessions with cold on the memory. Yes it is a bit messy at first the peace of mind of a condensation free session is totally worth it I think.
For just cpu, no need to go that hard if you live in a dry climate, but if the board is going to be benched cold on cpu, gpu and memory and is a permanent bench board then I don't think there is anything wrong with the vas treatment.
Also I don't think you need Hondacity style vas treatment with an inch tall layer of goo covering everything, just a thin layer and then melt it with the heat gun so it goes everywhere in those hard to reach spots.
ew, i just use silicone grease, and unlike vas it is really hard to remove. But I found away using a part of my insulation method I no longer use: the rubber eraser. It is VERY absorbent and absorbs the grease right up, and if you let it sit on a piece of paper or a napkin, after time I think the grease goes to it and you can reuse the eraser to erase the grease. I still don't have the balls to toss my motherboard into a dishwasher lol.

. You will still have to insulate of course and be careful of some areas that obviously can't be covered with conformal like socket, dimm slots, PCIe pins, power pins etc. Most of us started out a long time ago with plastic spray and then realised it needed reapplication and further insulation so it was a bit of a pain and moved onto more effective methods such as LET (liquid electrical tape), blutac, rice (lol remember that) and then kneaded eraser and now straight up grease and paper towels which is still the ultimate and you will have to do it anyways. seems that board has mosfets and chokes greased up in the video also which would probably make sense if mosfets generate a lot of heat to make sure the don't overheat if conformal is applied over them i guess.
