AMD tops the multithreaded benchmarks thanks to 16 way opteron platform

What do you do when you get your hands on a Sun Fire x4600 powered with eight dual core AMD Opteron 8220SE chips? Benchmark it of course. Joegaz had the opportunity to benchmark his fancy new server, and reached the top spot in no time.

While the single threaded performance isn’t exactly stellar, the 16-way (8x dual core AMD 8220SE processor) platform flexes its muscles in multithreaded applications, like wPrime which makes full use of each available core. For comparisons, the fastest Intel based server on record is an 8-way (2x quad core Intel Xeon 5355 2.66Ghz) Dell Precision 920, which is almost half as slow. This shows the AMD platform scales very well, distributing the workload over 8 sockets perfectly.

AMD might have a hard time in the desktop market right now, it seems like are doing very well in the server market.

Some pictures of the 16-way opteron system by Sun:
Quad GigaBit Ethernet ports for maximum network expandability. Quad redundant hot-swappable power supplies.Up to four hot-swappable hard disk drives with standard DVD-ROM.Status LEDs and power on/off. Large opening for maximum airflow. Redundant, hot-swappable fans.Up to eight dual-core or single-core AMD Opteron processors and 64 GB of memory. The Sun Fire X4600 server is the industry's first 4 RU modular x64 server expandable to 16-way in single chassis.
The cost is the same of a decent car, but damn it looks nice. :)
