I used to have a lot of ASUS products and I was happy with them all except for ASUS' mobo. My first ASUS dual CPU mobo is Z9PE-D8 WS - which pushed me far away from ASUS's product. That was a really bad experiences for me. Can you imaging you bought a new mobo which didn't work, then you replaced another one which still didn't work, then you wanted to replace it again, for this time ASUS said "I am going to charge you because your mobo is not brand new, it doesn't come with standard warranty" something like that. So finally I through that suck away and got a EVGA-SR-X.
After three years, it is time to upgrade my Workstation. As a student, I don't have enough budget to get some kinda of powerful stock xeon. So started with ES version, and the seller told me I'd better use this mobo. That is the reason I picked up ASUS' mobo again. Fortunately it works for my ES CPUS. However, their are still a lot of problems come out of my new build.
At the first, for this mobo, Just like Derek Said, the boot time is heavily delayed by its remote function we never would use. Everytime I boot up my computer, I can always see a "initializing BMC" phrase on the post. This guy would cost me around 3mins or more to wait before I could login my CENTOS. I just did some researching on this function, it is kinda of adapter for ASUS remote control function like IPMI. I tried to shut it down but also failed. No BIOS options, No jumper options(even BMC in Z10PE-D16 can be jumper disabled). Finally I just have to keep my computer on all the day. And I have to wait more than 3mins if I wished to switch between my systems(centos and Win7 where on the different disk). Come on, this is a workstation mobo! I can't imaging in what kind of situation I am going to need a remote control for my WS, and moreover, they don't even give me a option to shut it down. For this reason, I subtract a star for it.
On the other hand, I have some complains for the mobo I received. I got a USED mobo, I could see some scratches from the screw ring on the motherboard. Besides, no manual! I had to use my smart phone to download the manual during the installation.
The third point is this mobo only have one USB2.0 adapter for front panel. that is not enough for me.
And it do have some pros:
stable after I did a bunch of 3D rendering/Sim works.
Have a lot of SATAs which beat EVGA SR-X
has enough ram slots.
good support for ES CPUS.
And last, the ASUS technical support. this is not my first time I deal some problems with them. I thought they would improve their service at least a little bit after three year past. I was totally wrong. The technical guy I talked with didn't even know what the BMC is, I had to told him" BMC is the abbreviation of baseboard management controller" then he could start to do some searching work. After 30 mins wait He finally came back and told me "THIS IS NORMAL!!!" I couldn't express my feeling at that time. I just can't understand why their service still being such a mess even three years already past.
Because of my CPUS, I could't take risk to get another brand mobo. So I just followed Derek' comment and ordered a Z10PE-D8 WS. For those who are interested in this mobo, I would like to say, this mobo is made for troubleshooter. If you are not a expert in computer just like me, you would face problems you couldn't handle. you also couldn't get any support from ASUS, they are useless, like always.
This board was very finicky from the start. Won't boot with the four sticks of memory I purchased from Kingston, only two.
I ran for nearly two years with a single processor. It mostly worked, although wouldn't boot with the Nvidia graphics card installed at times, so I pulled the card and used only onboard VGA or accessed the PC remotely. Worked fine for my uses.
So I decided it's time to upgrade to a second CPU. The board powers up, but no POST and no boot. Not with the bios I first tried (listed as compatible by Asus) or the most recent BIOS.
I have a message in to Asus as it is still covered under warranty, but at this time I think it might be time to cut my losses on wasted time trying to make this thing do what it is advertised as doing and simply buy an Intel board.
The setup was straight-forward, and it has been running with minimal to no issues.
I am now looking at options to extend the life of this system, considering adding newer (more cores) 26xx CPUs, more RAM, and larger SSDs.
I see reviews where some have had issues with bad boards or poor customer service - I feel for those individuals - but I wanted to take a moment and post that not everyone has had bad experiences with this board.
Your mileage may vary.
I want to note explicitly that I have dual E5-2867W v4 processors installed, and the board is handling them with no problems.
Update after about a month: still working well, but I'm now a bit cranky about the BIOS fan control. I wasn't able to find a way to set a custom RPM curve; maybe consumer enthusiast boards have spoiled me. Otherwise, no further issues.
